Kristina Knabenshue

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Maine since 2014

Educational Background

I earned my Master of Science degree in Counseling, with a concentration in Rehabilitation, from the University of Southern Maine in August 2013. Prior to that, I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Community Studies, with a concentration in Applied Psychology, from the University of Maine at Machias in May 2010.

I have been a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) since 2014. More recently, I became a Certified Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist (ASDCS), an ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP), and a Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) Certified Provider. Additionally, I am a retired Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and a retired Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. While I do not utilize either of these certifications in my private practice, I still retain the educational background and expertise from these disciplines.

In my practice, I use a collaborative, person-centered approach rooted in wellness and respect for neurodiversity. I tailor interventions to the individual, integrating strategies that support emotional regulation, strengthen executive functioning, and foster insight without attempting to change core identity. My work emphasizes practical skill-building, validating lived experiences, and enhancing clients’ autonomy and self-understanding. I also incorporate psychoeducation, mindfulness-informed practices, and strengths-based methods to promote meaningful, client-defined growth.

About me

I love coffee and the quieter side of life. At home, I live with my husband, daughter, and two quirky cats, Mozzarella and Crackers. In my free time, I enjoy reading, drawing, gaming, cooking, writing, and, of course, napping. I’ve been called a nerd or a geek a time or two—and I wear that badge proudly.
